The story is written by Ray Bradbury.
The story is set in the year 2026, in an automated house located in Allendale, California, following a nuclear holocaust. The house, equipped with advanced technology, continues to perform its programmed tasks despite being empty of human life.
The absence of the McClellan family, who were likely killed in the nuclear explosion, is evident, as the house mechanically carries out daily routines.
1. Morning Routine: The automated systems wake up the empty house, prepare breakfast, and manage reminders. The robotic mice clean the house, while the sprinklers water the garden, which remains unaffected by the destruction outside.
2. The Dog's Entry: A starving, injured dog, the only living creature, enters the house. The dog’s poor condition highlights the devastating effects of the nuclear explosion. It searches desperately for its owners but dies from starvation and injuries after frothing at the mouth.
3. Disposal of the Dog’s Remains: The automated cleaning system detects the dog's death and disposes of its remains in the incinerator, continuing its programmed routine without any emotional response.
4. Afternoon and Evening: The house’s systems prepare lunch, set the table for a nonexistent bridge game, and play soothing music. In the children’s nursery, colorful exotic animals are projected onto the glass walls, creating a comforting, child-friendly environment. Despite these efforts, the house remains empty.
5. Fire and Destruction: As evening progresses, the house plays Sara Teasdale’s poem "There Will Come Soft Rains," which reflects the resilience of nature and humanity’s absence. The story ends tragically when a tree blown into the house causes a fire, destroying the automated house. The only remnant is a functioning clock, which declares the date, August 5, 2026.
Themes:
• The inevitability of nature’s dominance over human achievements.
• The futility of advanced technology without human presence.
• The dangers of unchecked scientific and military advancement.
• The resilience of nature and its indifference to human struggles.
This story serves as a haunting reminder of the fragility of human existence and the irreversible consequences of war, emphasizing the need to value nature and balance technological progress with responsibility.
